Why this page exists
In clinic, women describe the same pattern with unsettling regularity: bleeding noticed months or years ago, a problem hidden from family, and a decision — usually unspoken — not to see a doctor because the doctor would almost certainly be a man.
That delay has a cost. A fissure caught early often settles with diet correction and topical treatment. The same fissure two years later has usually become chronic, with a sentinel tag and a spastic sphincter, and now needs a procedure. Second-degree piles are far easier to treat than fourth-degree piles. Waiting rarely makes the treatment smaller.
None of this is an argument that a woman doctor treats these conditions better than a man. It is an argument that a treatment you will actually attend beats one you keep postponing.
Pregnancy and after delivery
Pregnancy raises abdominal pressure and slows the bowel, and both piles and fissure are common in the third trimester and the weeks after delivery. Most respond to diet correction, stool softening and topical treatment, and settle as the body recovers.
Procedures are usually deferred until after delivery and, where a woman is breastfeeding, until medication choices can be made safely. What does not need deferring is the examination — knowing whether you have a fissure, piles or something else changes what you should be doing right now.
